Artist's Statement
Alice's creations are a
delight to behold and reflect the variety of human cultures around the
world, both past and present.
Alice's figures begins at the loom with her weaving her own fabric. Once
it's woven, Alice begins the laborious process of creating the figure's
torso and head by crocheting. With the body complete, Alice next takes
willow branches and, using woodworking tools, she cuts the branches,
shaping them into arms and legs. She uses a sander to add the texture to
the limbs, and then adds color by applying designs with acrylic paint.
To create a face for the doll, Alice hand-stitches a face into the
fabric. She then braids and sews in the hair, which is composed from a
blend of nylon and goat hair. As Alice tends to perfection, her work
reflects an intense attention to detail. Because her pieces are so
detailed, Alice's output is relatively small.
