Biba Schutz
Artist's Statement
New York artist Biba Schutz
has combined her various fields of study to create a totally unique
look in her jewelry. She has a BA in design from American University in
Washington, DC, as well as education in printmaking from Pratt Graphics
Center in NY, and in fiber from Instituto de Allende, in Mexico.
Schutz's jewelry shows evidence of both printmaking and fiber, as it is
rich in positive and negative space, as well as being wonderfully
tactile.
Biba's work is mostly constructed from oxidized sterling silver,
bronze, and copper, giving warmth and depth to her already organic
look. She creates a form by manipulating wire as if it were thread. Schutz's
feelilng for sculptural form is so strong that for some years she could
not decide to work as a sculptor or a jeweler. Even after settling into
her metier, she still creates pieces that can be displayed as
autonomous sculptures. Biba is featured in numerous publications.
