Bird Artist's
Statement I am an eclectic person. I collect images,
places, bits of flotsam, laughter, smiles. Many subjects intrigue me,
and diversion is an important part of my process. Technical challenges
and ideas lead me down maze-like roads of exploration.
A lifelong interest in anthropology informs my reflections on the
cultural contexts of universal questions. As you will see on this
website, my art is varied -- wearables to doll forms, art quilts, and
artist books -- on subjects ranging from serious to whimsical, personal
to political. For twelve years, I focused on one-of-a-kind and limited
edition women's clothing. In 1996, my book, Sew a Work of Art: Inside
and Out, was published. With the book project completed, I began
developing work in both two and three dimensional forms exploring
personal identity and issues of modern life - time, space, context,
conspicuous consumption, corporate culture.
My work has been shown in numerous juried shows around the country
including the Visions Quilt Show in San Diego, California. The
Neutrogena Corporation and other professional collectors have included
my work in their collections.
I am a member of several professional artist organizations including
California Fibers, Pacific Quilt Artists, Surface Design Association,
Friends of Fiber Art International and Studio Art Quilt Associates.
