Brenna Busse
Artist's Statement
I was born and
raised in Minneapolis, MN where my husband and I are raising our
daughter and a little white dog. I answered the call to art
making relatively late in life. I started as a painter. I soon
found the canvas too restrictive and discovered the joy of mixed
media. Creating my first figure was a prayer for a child! I was
inspired by folk art and fertility fetishes of the world
cultures.
I use the humble materials of life: earth clay, fabric, found
objects, natural elements. Made using the handwork techniques
usually done by women: sewing, stuffing, stitching; the images
carry a deep familiarity. From small hand held images to larger
wall pieces, I want my figures to be a part of our collective
lives. My hope is that they touch others like they have touched
my life in the process of making them.
My work carries the joy of creating - and my deep faith that
beauty is the balm that touches and heals our souls.
