Jon and Tracy Haaland
Chemical Wedding

Artist's Statement

Pulling inspiration from their fine art backgrounds, Seattle area artists Jon and Tracy Haaland of Chemical Wedding strive to bring utility and wearablity to their art.

Jon attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle focusing mainly on printmaking and sculpture. After college Jon began work designing and hand painting high-end custom wall coverings that have adorned such walls as the Bellagio, and many private residences such as Oprah, Cher, and Mick Jagger. His designs have also graced the pages of Architectural Digest and Elle Decor. It was during this time at the studio where he and Tracy met.

Tracy attended University of North Carolina at Greensboro receiving a BFA in painting and printmaking. She has had solo and group shows at various art galleries in Seattle, has had many commissioned paintings and has illustrated a children's book. Her family is steeped in artistic tradition and it was quite influential in her development as an artist. Both of Tracy's mom and grandmother a re painters and her father is a textile designer.

In 2003 Jon and Tracy teamed up to create a line of unique handcrafted handbags showing mainly in local galleries and art fairs. They used new and scrap leathers together with hand-formed copper rings, intricate silk screen designs and their own brand of rustic hand crafted wood handles creating pieces of wearable art that are out of the ordinary. In a short amount of time their handbags have been seen in galleries and boutiques around the world from San Francisco to Hong Kong. Jon and Tracy handcraft each bag to order. The artistic process is what they love. The "Chemical Wedding" exemplifies an alchemical transmutation of form, such as lead into gold.

Jon and Tracy are continually striving to transform fine art, and design into a utilitarian piece of elegant, wearable sculpture uniting form and function. A perfect "Chemical Wedding".
