Phil Woodward
Artist's Statement
Phil Woodward works out of small studio he built himself next to a
creek. He shares his time and energies with a group of friends who all
live in the same hollow in rural Tennessee. His studio is his
private hideaway. He says he tries to create work that reflects the
mindfulness and serenity that is inspired by all of the natural beauty
surrounding his studio. He has been selling his work at juried art
festivals for years, collecting awards along the way. Phil wants his
oil lamps to be used. This is why he uses wicks that never need to be
replaced and includes a squirt bottle that will make it easy
to fill the lamps. He says he hopes that burning them brings a little
more peace into the lives of those who use them.
Woodward's vessels are glazed ceramic with sealed polymer-coated interior walls.
Most designs have wood armatures that are painted black. Poly/rayon
cords are also black. Fiberglass wicks never need trimming. Lengths of
cords vary, but generally the height of the cord from the wall bracket
to the oil lamp is between 18" and 24". Width of wood armatures vary
from 8" to 9".
